DECEMBER 2018 LEGISLATIVE LIAISON INVOICE/ACTIVITY REPORT
As we enter December and the annual holiday season, it also becomes a period of legislative activity on my part as we begin planning for the start of the 2019 Legislative Session scheduled to begin on January 8, 2019. It is an exciting time as well as we plan for new party leadership with the DFL taking leadership control of the House as a result of the Fall elections.
The DFL leadership has just announced a new Committee structure in the House, increasing the number of Committees and Sub-committees to 34, and with a pronounced change within the Public Safety and Civil Law structure. Here's a little about the changes: Public Safety & Criminal Justice Reform Finance and Policy Division will be chaired by Rep. Carlos Mariani from District 65B in the St Paul area, and who will be entering his nineteenth year in the Legislature.
There will be a new Sub-Committee on Corrections, chaired by Rep. Jack Considine from District19B in the Mankato area. He is starting his third term having been first elected in 2014. Being a retired Corrections Officer himself and having a daughter who also entered our profession, Rep. Considine has been a real advocate for our needs. I look forward to working closely with him to actively pursue our legislative priorities this next Session.
Another new Committee in this structure is the Judiciary Finance and Policy Division, which will be chaired by Rep. John Lesch, Disrict 66B in St Paul. Rep[. Lesch has been in the Legislature since 2002, and has also been a Legislator we have been able to rely on the support and advocate on our behalf.
With these three experienced leaders in these key Committees, we can expect to have a very busy agenda providing us a great opportunity to advance many of our past legislative priorities as well as addressing our newer goals and objectives.
On the Senate side, under the leadership of the Republicans, the Senate Judiciary Division will again be chaired by our friend and supporter, Senator Warren Limmer , District 34 around Maple Grove. Senator Limmer has also been a legislative leader who has always been receptive to working with us and I look forward to another active year in working with him on our goals.
This struct;ure will surely mean more Committee meetings and many more legislative proposals being considered, and I am very optimistic about our own legislative agenda this next year. My time for the next several weeks will be spent reaching out to Legislators with our newly adopted legislative agenda and preparing for the start of a very busy Session.
